When was Farmers created?
In 1909 Robert Laidlaw founded Laidlaw Leeds, an agricultural supplies mail order catalogue. In 1917 the Farmers’ Union Trading Company merged with Laidlaw Leeds to form the Farmers’ Trading Company, which adopted the department store format. By 1920 the company had 32 stores, including a retail space in their centre of operations.
In the following decades Farmers continued to expand, reaching 56 stores in 1990. In 1992 Farmers joined the DEKA discount chain to form Farmers Deka Ltd., but the name would change again in 2001 after DEKA closed, this time to Farmers Holdings Ltd.
In 2015 Farmers opened a new three level department store on the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets.
